Lesson Plan: Storytelling for 5th Grade Elementary School Students

Objective: Students will be able to understand the elements of storytelling and create their own stories using those elements.

Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Storytelling prompts (e.g. pictures, objects, words) - Paper and pencils - Storytelling rubric

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin by asking students if they have ever heard a good story. What made it good? What elements did it have? 2. Explain that today, we will be learning about storytelling and how to create our own stories. 3. Write the word “storytelling” on the board and ask students to brainstorm what they think it means. Write their ideas on the board.

Body (60 minutes): 1. Explain the elements of storytelling: characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. Write each element on the board and give examples. 2. Divide students into pairs or small groups and give them a storytelling prompt (e.g. a picture, object, or word). Instruct them to use the prompt to create a story that includes all of the elements of storytelling. 3. Allow students time to work on their stories and provide assistance as needed. 4. Once students have completed their stories, have them share with the class. Encourage them to use their storytelling skills to make their stories engaging and interesting. 5. After each group has shared, have the class discuss what they liked about each story and what elements of storytelling were present.

Conclusion (20 minutes): 1. Review the elements of storytelling and ask students to reflect on what they learned today. 2. Pass out the storytelling rubric and explain how it will be used to assess their storytelling skills. 3. Instruct students to take their stories home and practice telling them to family and friends. 4. End the lesson by reminding students that everyone has a story to tell and that storytelling is a powerful way to connect with others.

Assessment: Students will be assessed on their ability to include all elements of storytelling in their stories and their ability to engage the audience with their storytelling skills. The storytelling rubric will be used to assess their performance.
