Saturday 16th November 1940

Tonight is the worst night ever. My family and I are huddled in the air raid shelter, deep in the root of our house. We hear the whistle of bombs dropping and the screeching of planes above. The whole house is shaking and I can feel my heart racing. My mum is trying her best not to cry, but I can see her eyes filling up with tears.

Fortunately, it’s not long before the raid ends and the ground is still. We emerge from the shelter, and what we see almost takes our breath away. Our house is completely smashed and the entire street is in ruins. We are lucky to be alive. I wish this nightmare was over and Mother Nature was restored.

We go to help with the clean up of our street, although it doesn’t seem to be helping much. Everywhere I look is destruction. I just hope we can make it through this terrible time. I promise myself – we will get through this.

Love, Alice
