Grade Level: 4th Grade

Subject: Physical Education

Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate fundamental movements while participating in a relay race. They will also be able to add progressions to make the race more challenging.

Materials: Cones, stopwatch, music

Warm-Up (5 minutes): - Start with a quick warm-up to get the students’ blood flowing. Have them jog in place for 30 seconds, then do jumping jacks for 30 seconds, and then high knees for 30 seconds.

Introduction (5 minutes): - Explain to the students that they will be participating in a relay race that will involve fundamental movements. - Review the fundamental movements that will be used in the race: running, jumping, hopping, skipping, and galloping.

Activity (20 minutes): - Divide the class into teams of 4-5 students. - Set up cones to mark the start and finish lines. - Have the first student from each team line up at the start line. - When you say “go,” the first student from each team will run to the first cone, jump over it, hop to the second cone, skip to the third cone, gallop to the fourth cone, and then run back to tag the next student in line. - The next student will then complete the same course. - The first team to have all of their students complete the course wins. - After a few rounds, add progressions to make the race more challenging. For example, have the students do the course backwards, or have them do it while holding a ball or beanbag.

Cool-Down (5 minutes): - Have the students jog in place for 30 seconds, then do some stretching exercises to cool down.

Assessment: - Observe the students’ ability to perform the fundamental movements during the relay race. - Observe the students’ ability to add progressions to make the race more challenging. - Provide feedback to the students on their performance.
