Lesson Plan: Introduction to the Ghana Stock Exchange

Procedure:

Introduction (10 minutes) - Begin by asking students if they have ever heard of the Ghana Stock Exchange. If so, ask them to share what they know about it. - Explain that the Ghana Stock Exchange is a marketplace where stocks, bonds, and other securities are bought and sold. It is an important part of the country’s economy and plays a role in attracting foreign investment.

History of the Ghana Stock Exchange (15 minutes) - Use the projector to show a timeline of the history of the Ghana Stock Exchange. Explain that it was established in 1990 and has since grown to become one of the largest stock exchanges in West Africa. - Discuss some of the major events that have occurred in the history of the exchange, such as the introduction of electronic trading in 2008.

Purpose of the Ghana Stock Exchange (15 minutes) - Hand out the handouts on the Ghana Stock Exchange and ask students to read through them. - Discuss the purpose of the exchange, which is to provide a platform for companies to raise capital by selling shares to investors. This allows companies to expand and create jobs, while also giving investors the opportunity to earn a return on their investment.

How the Ghana Stock Exchange operates (20 minutes) - Use the whiteboard to draw a diagram of how the Ghana Stock Exchange operates. Explain that companies that want to sell shares on the exchange must first meet certain requirements, such as having a certain level of financial stability. - Discuss the role of brokers, who act as intermediaries between buyers and sellers on the exchange. Explain that brokers charge a fee for their services. - Finally, discuss some of the risks and benefits of investing in the Ghana Stock Exchange. Emphasize that investing in the stock market always carries some level of risk, but that it can also be a way to earn a return on your money.

Conclusion (5 minutes) - Ask students to share one thing they learned about the Ghana Stock Exchange that they didn’t know before. - Emphasize the importance of understanding how the stock market works, even if you don’t plan to invest in it yourself.
