In the last chapter of The Malamander, the titular creature, a giant sea creature, is unleashed from its icy prison. When it appears from under the sea, the malamander terrifies the inhabitants of Eerie-on-Sea. Violet and Herbert, with the help of the mysterious boy Erasmus, are able to defeat the creature and restore peace to the town. Afterward, Erasmus vanishes as mysteriously as he appeared. Violet and Herbert, as well as the other citizens of Eerie-on-Sea, are forever changed by the events of this fateful day.
