The last chapter of Malamander sees young Herbie and Violet, together with Ingrid, the sea-witch, and Esmerelda, the mermaid, battling against Skewer the sea monster and his army of malamanders. While Ingrid uses her powerful magical spells to fight them off, Esmerelda helps by rescuing the malamanders and leading them away from the fight. Finally, Ingrid is able to defeat Skewer and return the malamanders to the sea. Herbie and Violet are finally able to return to their home town, having saved the day and made a new friend in Esmerelda. At the end of the book, the two young heroes pause to look at the peaceful sea and wonder what other adventures and discoveries the future holds for them.
