In recent years, a multitude of adolescents around the world have had to migrate for various reasons. This phenomenon of adolescent migration has been on the rise, recording approximately 8.2 million adolescents moving between countries in 2018. The decision to migrate is difficult and complex in nature, requiring adolescents to assess the varied risks and benefits that the decision brings.
When adolescents undertake the arduous journey of migration, they often face a myriad of challenges in the form of mental, physical and social hardships. Oftentimes, they may encounter language and cultural barriers which can impede their ability to integrate into the new society and acquire basic services like education. Moreover, adolescents risk having their rights as minors violated, including exploitation and illegal labour. Despite the risks, a number of tangible benefits can be seen in cases of adolescent migration.
Since 2017, evidence has indicated that adolescent migration has been associated with the alleviation of poverty, an increase in the likelihood of obtaining an education and improved future employment prospects. Additionally, adolescent migrants receive an immense opportunity to explore, participate in and assimilate into a new culture, potentially leading to a greater sense of self-worth and purpose.
Given the complexities of adolescent migration, the case for international support is evident. The United Nations launched the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in 2018 to promote cooperation and coordination for the management of migration at the international level, placing a special emphasis on safeguarding adolescent migrants’ rights. The United Nations Refugee Agency also continued to provide assistance to adolescents on the move in 2018, such as facilitating refugee staments, strengthening legal assistance and creating safe spaces for unaccompanied children.
Ultimately, adolescent migration can bring with it numerous opportunities and challenges alike. Nation states and key stakeholders must make an effort to protect the rights of adolescent migrants and provide the necessary assistance for successful integration into local societies.
