Grade 1 Math Lesson Planner: Complete Symmetry Drawing on Workbook

Objective: Students will learn about symmetry and practice creating symmetrical drawings.

Materials: - Workbook or blank sheets of paper - Pencils - Colored pencils or markers (optional)

Lesson Plan:

Introduction: 1. Begin the lesson by asking the students if they know what symmetry means. Allow a few students to share their ideas. 2. Explain that symmetry is when an object or shape can be divided into two equal parts that are mirror images of each other. 3. Show examples of symmetrical objects or shapes, such as a butterfly, a heart, or a square. Point out the line of symmetry in each example.

Activity: 1. Distribute the workbooks or blank sheets of paper to each student. 2. Instruct the students to fold their paper in half vertically, creating a crease down the middle. 3. Explain that they will be creating symmetrical drawings by drawing on one side of the crease and then folding the paper to see the mirror image on the other side. 4. Demonstrate the process by drawing a simple shape, such as a circle or a square, on one side of the crease. Then fold the paper along the crease to reveal the symmetrical image on the other side. 5. Allow the students to practice creating symmetrical drawings on their own. Encourage them to experiment with different shapes, lines, and patterns. 6. Circulate around the classroom, providing assistance and guidance as needed. Encourage students to try different techniques and be creative with their drawings. 7. For students who finish early, encourage them to add color to their symmetrical drawings using colored pencils or markers.

Closure: 1. Gather the students together and have a few volunteers share their symmetrical drawings with the class. 2. Discuss the different shapes and patterns that the students used in their drawings. 3. Recap the concept of symmetry and remind the students that symmetrical objects or shapes have a line of symmetry that divides them into two equal parts. 4. Conclude the lesson by praising the students for their creativity and effort in creating symmetrical drawings.

Extension Activity: 1. If time permits, provide the students with additional worksheets or activities that involve creating symmetrical drawings. 2. Encourage the students to explore symmetry in the world around them by looking for symmetrical objects or shapes in their environment. 3. Have the students create a symmetrical collage using cut-out shapes from magazines or colored paper.

Note: This lesson plan can be adjusted based on the specific needs and abilities of the students in your grade 1 class.
