Grade 1 Math Lesson Planner: Less Than and Greater Than

Objective: Students will be able to understand and use the concepts of “less than” and “greater than” to compare numbers.

Materials: - Number cards (0-9) - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Worksheets or activity sheets (optional)

Lesson Plan:

Introduction: 1. Begin the lesson by reviewing the concept of numbers and counting with the students. 2. Ask the students if they know what “less than” and “greater than” mean. Allow them to share their ideas and explanations.

Development: 3. Introduce the number cards from 0 to 9. Show each card to the students and ask them to identify the number. 4. Write the numbers 0 to 9 on the whiteboard or chart paper, leaving enough space between each number. 5. Explain that “less than” means a number is smaller or lower than another number, while “greater than” means a number is bigger or higher than another number. 6. Model a few examples using the number cards. For example, hold up the number 3 card and ask the students which numbers are less than 3. Write the numbers 0, 1, and 2 below the number 3. Repeat the process for greater than, using numbers 4, 5, and 6. 7. Engage the students by asking them to come up to the board and place the number cards in the correct positions, showing which numbers are less than or greater than the given number.

Guided Practice: 8. Divide the students into pairs or small groups. 9. Distribute worksheets or activity sheets that have number comparisons for the students to complete. 10. Instruct the students to compare the numbers and write the correct symbol (< or >) in the blank spaces. 11. Circulate around the classroom, providing assistance and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice: 12. After completing the worksheets or activity sheets, gather the students back together as a whole group. 13. Review the answers together, allowing students to share their responses and explanations. 14. If time permits, provide additional practice by playing a game of “Greater Than, Less Than.” Give each student a number card and have them stand in a line. Call out a number, and the students must quickly arrange themselves in order from least to greatest or greatest to least.

Conclusion: 15. Summarize the lesson by reviewing the concepts of “less than” and “greater than” with the students. 16. Ask the students to share any new insights or connections they made during the lesson. 17. Provide positive feedback and reinforcement for their efforts and understanding.

Extension: 18. For advanced students, introduce the concept of “equal to” (=) and have them practice comparing numbers using all three symbols (<, >, =). 19. For struggling students, provide additional practice and reinforcement through hands-on activities or manipulatives, such as using number lines or counting objects.

Assessment: 20. Assess the students’ understanding through observation during the lesson, as well as their completion of the worksheets or activity sheets. 21. Provide feedback and address any misconceptions or areas of difficulty as needed.
