Maths Planner for Grade 1: Complete Symmetry Drawing on Workbook
Objective: To introduce and develop the concept of symmetry through hands-on activities and exercises.
Materials Needed: - Workbook or sheets of paper - Pencils or crayons - Ruler - Scissors (optional) - Glue (optional)
Lesson 1: Introduction to Symmetry 1. Begin by discussing the concept of symmetry with the students. Explain that symmetry is when an object can be divided into two equal parts that are mirror images of each other. 2. Show examples of symmetrical objects such as a butterfly, a heart, or a square. Discuss how these objects have a line of symmetry. 3. Have the students identify the line of symmetry in each object and point it out.
Lesson 2: Symmetry Drawing 1. Distribute the workbooks or sheets of paper to each student. 2. Instruct the students to fold their paper in half vertically, creating a crease down the middle. 3. Explain that they will be drawing the other half of an object by using the line of symmetry as a guide. 4. Demonstrate by drawing a simple shape on one side of the crease, such as a circle or a triangle. 5. Instruct the students to complete the drawing by mirroring the shape on the other side of the crease. 6. Encourage creativity and experimentation with different shapes and designs. 7. Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and guidance as needed.
Lesson 3: Symmetry Patterns 1. Introduce the concept of symmetry patterns to the students. 2. Show examples of symmetrical patterns such as stripes, polka dots, or checkerboards. 3. Discuss how these patterns repeat in a symmetrical way. 4. Instruct the students to create their own symmetrical patterns on their workbook or sheet of paper. 5. They can use pencils, crayons, or other coloring materials to create their patterns. 6. Encourage the students to experiment with different shapes, colors, and designs. 7. Optional: If available, students can cut out their symmetrical patterns and glue them onto a separate sheet of paper to create a collage.
Lesson 4: Symmetry in Nature 1. Take the students on a nature walk around the school or nearby area. 2. Instruct them to observe and identify objects or elements in nature that exhibit symmetry, such as leaves, flowers, or insects. 3. Encourage the students to sketch or take pictures of these symmetrical objects. 4. Back in the classroom, have a discussion about the symmetrical objects they found and how they exhibit symmetry. 5. Optional: Students can create a collage or display of their sketches or pictures to showcase the symmetrical objects they found.
Assessment: - Observe students’ participation and engagement during the lessons. - Review completed workbook pages or sheets of paper to assess their understanding of symmetry and ability to create symmetrical drawings. - Provide feedback and guidance as needed.
Extension Activities: - Explore more complex symmetrical shapes and designs. - Introduce rotational symmetry and its relationship to complete symmetry. - Incorporate technology by using online symmetry drawing tools or apps. - Integrate symmetry into other subjects, such as art or science, by creating symmetrical artwork or studying symmetrical organisms.
