Good afternoon Year 4,
Today we are here to talk about one of the most influential societies in human history, the ancient Maya. The Maya were a Mesoamerican people who lived in modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras from 2000 BC to the 16th century AD.
The Maya were an incredibly innovative people, renowned for their architectural structures and sculptures, their advanced agricultural techniques, and their intricate calendars and hieroglyphic writing.
The Maya were renowned for their sophistication. As well as their farming skills, they developed an advanced system of mathematics and an exact calendar. They also made use of advanced water management systems to grow crops and built large cities with pyramids and artwork.
Their architecture was exquisite, with elaborate stone temples, pyramids and plazas, decorated with mystical symbols and artwork.
The Maya also had complex beliefs about their place in the universe. They believed in many gods, a number of which were sun and earth gods. They also believed that life was a cycle of death, rebirth and transformation.
The Maya were a very advanced society for their time and their civilisations are still studied and admired today.
