Title: Exploring Place Value

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Duration: 45 minutes

Objective: - Students will demonstrate their understanding of place value by correctly identifying and representing numbers up to 100 using base-ten blocks and expanded form.

Materials: - Base-ten blocks (ones, tens, and hundreds) - Whiteboards or paper - Markers or pencils - Number cards (0-9) - Assessment rubric

Procedure: 1. Introduction (5 minutes): - Begin the assessment by reviewing the concept of place value with the students. - Remind them that each digit in a number has a specific value based on its position. - Explain that they will be demonstrating their understanding of place value through various tasks.

  1. Task 1: Building Numbers (15 minutes):
    • Distribute base-ten blocks, number cards, and whiteboards or paper to each student.
    • Instruct the students to randomly select a number card and represent that number using base-ten blocks on their whiteboards or paper.
    • Walk around the classroom to observe and provide assistance as needed.
    • Once the students have completed their representations, ask them to write the number in expanded form beside their base-ten block representation.
    • Collect the whiteboards or papers for assessment.
  2. Task 2: Ordering Numbers (10 minutes):
    • Provide each student with a set of number cards (0-9).
    • Instruct the students to use the number cards to create three different two-digit numbers.
    • Once they have created the numbers, ask them to arrange the numbers in ascending order from smallest to largest.
    • Collect their arrangements for assessment.
  3. Task 3: Identifying Place Value (15 minutes):
    • Display a series of two-digit numbers on the board or projector.
    • Instruct the students to identify the value of the underlined digit in each number.
    • Encourage them to use base-ten blocks or expanded form to help them determine the value.
    • Collect their responses for assessment.
  4. Conclusion (5 minutes):
    • Review the importance of place value in understanding numbers.
    • Thank the students for their participation and effort during the assessment.

Assessment Rubric: - Task 1: Building Numbers - Correctly represents the number using base-ten blocks: 3 points - Correctly writes the number in expanded form: 2 points - Demonstrates understanding of place value: 1 point

  • Task 2: Ordering Numbers
    • Correctly arranges the numbers in ascending order: 3 points
    • Demonstrates understanding of place value: 2 points
  • Task 3: Identifying Place Value
    • Correctly identifies the value of the underlined digit: 3 points
    • Demonstrates understanding of place value: 2 points
