Lesson Plan: Making Connections and Retelling

Objective: Students will be able to make connections between the text and their own experiences, as well as retell the main events of a story.

Materials: - Various fiction books or short stories - Chart paper or whiteboard - Markers or whiteboard markers - Individual whiteboards or paper for each student - Timer or clock

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes) - Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever read a book or heard a story that reminded them of something in their own life. Allow a few students to share their experiences. - Explain that today, they will be learning about making connections while reading and how it helps us understand and enjoy stories better.

  2. Making Connections (10 minutes) - Introduce the three types of connections: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. - Write these three types on the chart paper or whiteboard. - Provide examples of each type of connection and ask students to think of their own examples for each type. - Model making a connection by reading a short passage from a book and sharing a personal connection. - Ask students to turn and talk to a partner, sharing a connection they have made with a book or story they have read before.

  3. Guided Practice: Making Connections (15 minutes) - Divide the class into small groups of 4-5 students. - Provide each group with a different book or short story. - Instruct students to read the assigned text together and discuss the connections they can make. - Circulate among the groups, listening to their discussions and providing guidance as needed. - After 10 minutes, bring the class back together and ask each group to share one connection they made.

  4. Retelling (10 minutes) - Explain to students that retelling is an important reading skill that helps us remember and understand the main events of a story. - Model retelling by summarizing the main events of a familiar story, using key details and sequencing words (first, next, then, finally). - Ask students to turn and talk to a partner, retelling a story they have read recently or a story they remember from their childhood.

  5. Guided Practice: Retelling (15 minutes) - Divide the class into small groups, ensuring that each group has a different book or short story from the previous activity. - Instruct students to take turns retelling the main events of the story they read, using key details and sequencing words. - Circulate among the groups, listening to their retellings and providing feedback as needed. - After 10 minutes, bring the class back together and ask each group to share a brief retelling of their story.

  6. Conclusion (5 minutes) - Review the importance of making connections and retelling as reading strategies. - Ask students to reflect on how these strategies can help them become better readers. - Provide an opportunity for students to ask any questions or share any final thoughts.
