Objective: Students will be able to identify the different layers of the earth and explain the characteristics of each layer.

Materials: -Large poster with a diagram of the layers of the earth -Cookie dough or pre-made dough mix -Rolling Pin -Cookie cutters (in 4 shapes representing the 4 major layers: crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core) -Bowl for mixing -Spatula -Cookie sheet -Parchment paper

Activity: 1. Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of Earth’s layers. Show the students the poster diagram you created and explain each of the four major layers of the Earth: crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. Ask the students questions to ensure they are understanding the concept.

  1. Move into the practical activity. Allow the students to choose either the pre-made cookie dough or the cookie dough mix. Choose one student to be the recipe demonstrator and another to take notes on the instructions.

  2. Once the dough is prepared and ready to be used, bring out the rolling pin, cookie cutters, and parchment paper and place them in different groups on the tables.

  3. Explain to the students that they must roll the dough out and use the cookie cutters to make shapes representing the four layers of the Earth. Remind students that the shapes must all be the same size for uniformity.

  4. Allow students time to work on creating their shapes. Once they have finished, place the shapes on a cookie sheet. Instruct them to place them side-by-side in order from the crust to the inner core (crust - mantle - outer core - inner core).

  5. Have the students observe the shapes they created in order to recognize the differences between each layer. Ask the students questions to check their understanding.

  6. Finally, bake the shapes in the oven and allow the students to enjoy their Earth cookies!
